See photos from Saturday’s 45th annual Hispanic Festival

GRAND RAPIDS, MI - Colorful tents filled with handmade jewelry, clothing and pottery lined the entrance of the 45th annual Hispanic Festival on Saturday at Calder Plaza.

The free event benefits the Hispanic Center of Western Michigan and takes place from Aug. 4-6 celebrating Latin America’s cuisine, music and culture.

“I just love the music, the food and I even get to practice my Spanish,” said Laura Standel of Grand Rapids. Standel tries to make it to the Hispanic Festival every year.

“I love coming here but the food is definitely my favorite part,” Rafael Castanon of Grand Rapids said while putting toppings on his taco at La Favorita Mexican Restaurant’s tent.

Handmade artists like Ana Luz Sainz-Rodriguez set up their stand for people to shop. Sainz-Rodriguez, born in Mexico, came to Michigan when she was young and has dual citizenship in the U.S. and Mexico. She moved back for a few years to Michoacán until coming back to Michigan for high school.

Sainz-Rodriguez started Light Studio Pottery selling handmade mugs, vases, bowls and more.

The event continues through Sunday, Aug. 6, featuring bands Son De México, BM All Stars, Los Ramones De Nuevo León and Banda Maguey until 6 p.m.
